J&J COVID-19 vaccine possibly linked to another rare clotting condition: EU

The drug regulator of the European Union has found a possible link between rare cases of blood clots in deep veins with the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine and recommended that the condition must be listed as a side-effect of the vaccine.

The European Medicines Agency further recommended that immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) should be added as an adverse reaction with an unknown frequency to the product information of the J&J vaccine and the AstraZeneca shot.

J&J stated that though the likelihood of experiencing these conditions was very low, the product information would be updated accordingly. The J&J and AstraZeneca vaccines have previously been tied to a very rare combination of blood clot and low platelet count, known as thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS)… (Reuters, October 1, 2021)
